ZemenGEBEYA

The logistics system behind ZemenGEBEYA: consolidation, dispatching, driver jobs and proof of delivery, returns, incidents and live tracking across 18 regions, with an Expo driver app, a partner API and a public order-tracking portal. Around 600 drivers and 200 internal users work in it every day.

The problem

A national e-commerce operation has to move parcels from consolidation to the customer's door across 18 regions, with hundreds of drivers in the field and the operations team needing to know where every job stands, including the failures, returns and incidents.

Approach

One platform for the whole chain: the operations console handles consolidation and dispatching; drivers work their jobs from a mobile app that verifies delivery with OTP codes, reports failures, handles returns and raises SOS alerts; partners integrate through an API; and customers follow their order on a public tracking page.

Architecture

A React and TypeScript operations console on a self-hosted Supabase stack (Kong, GoTrue, PostgREST, Realtime and Storage over PostgreSQL and MinIO) behind Nginx, deployed with Docker Compose and kept current by Watchtower. Business logic runs in edge functions, including a versioned mobile API (now v7) that the Expo driver app uses. The order-tracking portal talks to the partner API through a small Backend-for-Frontend, so OAuth client secrets never reach the browser.

Features

  • Consolidation and dispatching across 18 regions
  • Drivers app (Expo / React Native): jobs, maps, background location and push notifications
  • OTP-verified delivery, failure reporting and returns management
  • SOS emergency system, incident management and job handovers
  • Location and telemetry from the field to the operations console
  • Versioned mobile API (v7) with session persistence and documented error codes
  • Partner API for integrations, plus a public order-tracking portal with a secure BFF
  • Self-hosted on a VPS with CI/CD and automatic container updates

Stack

React, TypeScript, Supabase (self-hosted), PostgreSQL, Edge Functions, Expo, React Native, Mapbox, Leaflet, MinIO, Docker, Nginx

Results

  • Used daily by around 600 drivers and 200 internal users
  • Running dispatch across 18 regions
  • Fully self-hosted: no dependency on a hosted backend

“In logistics the happy path is the easy part. Designing failures, returns, handovers and SOS as first-class flows is what made the system trusted by drivers and the operations team.”
